Penhaligon’s Review or how not to Tinder date!

” you’ve got to kiss a few toads before you find your prince”

It’s a brave new tindering world out there (yes I’m pretty sure Tinder has been verbed) and this means meeting complete strangers and praying to the appropriate deity that they look remotely like their profile pic. I’m a busy girl and I try to kill to birds with one stone, so on my last trip to London I planned to meet a guy for coffee, and go scope out some exciting new cruelty free beauty products!

Coffee date going well enough that we had something in common and didn’t despise each other on sight, I took a rather charming Portuguese man on a wild goose chase round Bond Street before finally finding Penhaligon’s.

Penhaligon’s is one of the last independent Perfumers in England dating back to 1870 and they hold 2 royal warrants and all their products are made in England. Their signature perfume bottle is the original Victorian design, and their shop interiors would not look out of place on the set of Harry Potter!

They also do a fragrance profile, to match you to your perfect perfume. The Sales lady, gave me and my new Portuguese friend a glass of prosecco (just because) and also a glass of water, because apparently when you smell a lot of fragrance you can go nose-blind, and drinking water cleanses your palette so you can smell clearly!

What I particularly love about Penhaligon’s, apart from them being cruelty free, is that all of their perfumes smell rare and opulent. In an age of mass-produced scent by countless celebrities, it’s a rare treat to find unique and truly luxury feeling perfumes.

The very lovely and knowledgeable sales lady gave me lots of difference samples to sniff on card testers, giving me two at a time, and asking me to keep the one I prefered each time. Once she had it narrowed down to a couple she then tested them on my skin. She gave me lots of information on the perfumes that we tried on my skin, their history and what they were inspired by, and we also had a chat about Perfume by Susskind, which is one of my all time favourite novels.

In the end I fell in love with Lothair (£128 for 100ml), which is part of Penhaligon’s Trade Routes collection – full description can be found here –

penhaligons.com/lothair

I really adored the way this smells on my skin, despite this being a unisex fragrance it smells extremely feminine on me but in a quite unusual way. Mr Portugal (yes he was still clinging on in there!!) declared it very sexy!

My close favourites that will no doubt be going on my Christmas and birthday wish lists of the future are:-

Artemisia (£112 for 100ml)

Vaara (£128 for 100ml)

Malabah (£112 for 100ml)

Since wearing my new perfume I get a lot of compliments on how nice I smell, and whenever I spray it on it instantly lifts my mood! It’s strange how perfume can be so evocative.

The Eyes Have It!

“her eyes as stars of twilight fair” – William Wordsworth

Hello lovelies, apologies for being quiet over the last couple of weeks I’ve been on holiday having a great time so no writing for me! It’s great to be back and I’m excited to share with you the best cruelty free mascaras I’ve discovered so far.

20160605_165131-01

  1. So far my absolute favourite is Better than Sex Mascara by Too Faced. It gives great volume and length without clumping. The only downside with this mascara is that it’s not the easiest to get hold of! You can get it direct from their website at £18.00 plus shipping www.toofaced.com I have also bought it from www.amazon.co.uk. But now you can buy Too Faced from Debenhams, yippee!!   www.debenhams.com/beauty/too-faced
  2. My second favourite is Lash Vegas with Fibres by Barry M (£6.49) this gives me lovely long lashes and its the only fibre mascara I’ve ever tried that doesn’t leave me with gross spider lashes! It has a more subtle effect than other fibre mascaras but in a good way.
  3. Next up is Make Up Revolution’s Awesome Lash Power and Definition (£3.00). I love the brush on this, I’m always a fan of a fat brush! I tend to use this when I’m going for a low key, “no make up” look.
  4. And finally Mega Volume Mascara by Make Up Academy (£3.00) another fat brush and delivers plenty of volume, also a fabulous price and excellent value for money!

I still have a few different mascaras I want to try, particularly Urban  Decay’s Perversion mascara and Kiko Milano’s Endless Sky Volume Effect mascara, so I’ll let you know how I get on with those!

Best Cruelty Free Lipsticks

Reds

I’m a sucker for a red lipstick! I think it’s the old school Hollywood connotations, but I always feel like treating myself to a new red lipstick is a little more decadent than buying any other colour. I think for that reason I only ever buy designer red lipstick. I prefer my reds matte, so most of these below are just that, but if you prefer more of a cream finish definitely check out Urban Decay and Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G.

  • Illamasqua – Maneater £19.50
  • Jeffree Star – Unicorn Blood $18.00 (about £12.42, but you may well get stung by customs when shipping, ouch!)
  • Urban Decay Gwen Stefani – Wonderland £16.00
  • Illamasqua – Liable £19.50
  • Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. – Lovebite £23.00
  • Urban Decay Gwen Stefani – Spiderweb £16.00
  • Jeffree Star – Anna Nicole $18.00 (about £12.42, but again customs when shipping!)
  • Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution – Red Carpet Ready £23.00

Nudes and Pinks

A good nude lipstick is every woman’s holy grail, and it’s important to find a shade that suits you. Think of them as your classic wardrobe basics that never go out of style!  I wear them all the time, yet I’m always on the hunt for a new one! I also alternate to pink in the summer, I’m not sure why exactly it just seems to suit my mood and my face better when I have a slight tan. I’m far less of a makeup snob when it comes to nudes and pinks and I buy from high street and designer brands! NYX Lip Lingerie is a gorgeous matte, but if that is not your thing the others on this list are a cream finish and the glosses from B. are fantastic if you prefer a sheer, glossy finish.

  • NXC Lip Lingerie – Lace Detail £6.50
  • Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. – Bitch Perfect £23.00
  • Soap & Glory  Sexy Mother Pucker – Pommie Girl £9.00
  • Make Up Revolution – Beloved £1.00!!!!
  • Barry M Lip Paint – Pink Ribbon £4.49
  • NXC Lip Lingerie – Bed Time Flirt £6.50
  • Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker – Naked Talent £9.00
  • Barry M Matte Me Up – Model Behaviour £4.99
  • MUA (Make Up Academy) Whipped Velvet – ChiChi £3.00
  • B.Beautiful Lip Gloss – Raspberry Coulis – £6.99

I’d love to know your cruelty free favourite lip products so please let me know in the comments if you think there’s anything I need to try!

Me Time Magic – Or how to be a Pampered Princess!

“there must be quite a few things a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them” – Sylvia Plath

I suspect my next confession won’t win me very many cool credentials, but there is nothing I love more on a Saturday afternoon/evening than an “at home” spa day and an early night in fresh laundered sheets, and if I’m really pushing the boat out, a nice cup of herbal tea!!

All the benefits of a spa break, without the travelling, expense and best of all knowing all the products are bunny friendly!

So I’m going to share with you my favourite pampering beauty treats!

I like to start by running a deep hot bath and while I’m waiting for that I give my face a good cleanse with my Kale Enzymatic Exfoliating Cleanser from Nourish (£16.50), and then I apply a face mask. I really like the sachets from Montagne Jeunesse (from £1.00) as it means I can choose whatever my face needs at the time.

20160416_091459-01 (1)

Leaving my face mask on, I then give my body a vigorous brush with my faithful body brush from The Body Shop (£8.00) and have a long relaxing soak in my bath tub!

Once I’m done soaking, I give my body a scrub with Soap & Glory’s Sugar Scrub (£8.00) which smells divine and leaves my skin super soft!

Snapchat-8916647929133381092-01

I get out of the bath and wrap myself in soft fluffy towels and remove my face mask, and then generously apply Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Body Lotion (£2.50 for 250ml)

I then massage B. Replenished Facial Oil (£13.99) into my face and apply B. Radiant Overnight Mask 50ml before hopping into bed with a good book or a box set on my laptop, bliss!!

I’d love to know your beauty rituals!
